In patients with light skin color, rose spots are seen in about 25% of cases. Public sanitation programs have virtually eliminated this disease from many parts of the world. About 2%-5% of untreated patients will become permanent carriers. The disease is spread by food and water contaminated with the feces or urine of infected patients or carriers. [Chin, p. 535-41]
