This disease is similar to Kyasanur forest disease. In severe cases, mucous membrane, gastrointestinal, and uterine hemorrhages occur. A 1% to 10% case-fatality rate is estimated. OHF is transmitted by ticks; it is also transmitted directly from muskrats to muskrat trappers and their families. A vaccine is available, but its effectiveness has not been proven. [Chin, p. 56-8]
