    This protozoan infection is transmitted by sand flies. Ulcers usually heal spontaneously within a few weeks or months. Some patients develop mucosal lesions (expundia) which can progress to destruction of naso-pharyngeal tissues. Working in the forest is a risk factor for this disease in Central and South America.
