Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome was first identified in 1993 in the Four Corners region of New Mexico, USA. Patients had flu-like symptoms followed by respiratory distress and hypotension with a mortality rate of about 50%. Workers are infected by inhaling aerosols of rodent excreta. Person to person transmission has not been seen in the USA, but it was reported in an outbreak in Argentina. [Chin, p. 234-6] Leucocytosis (increased white blood cells) is a found after the initial phase. [Merck Manual, p. 1311]
