"During 1980 through 1994, only 41 diphtheria cases were reported [in the United States]. . . . Health care personnel are not at substantially higher risk than the general adult population for acquiring diphtheria; however, there is a potential for sporadic or imported cases to require medical care in the United States. Diphtheria, caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, is transmitted by contact with respiratory droplets or contact with skin lesions of infected patients."
