The vector is nymphal Ixodes ticks, and the agent is a protozoan parasite of red blood cells. Patients have a febrile illness lasting several days to a few months. Hemolytic anemia with secondary jaundice has been reported. "Babesiosis is endemic on Nantucket and other islands in Massachusetts, Block Island, Shelter Island, eastern Long Island and southeastern Connecticut." Asymptomatic infections are common. Person-to-person transmission has not been reported except by blood transfusion. On blood smear examination, the parasite may be confused with plasmodium falciparum. [Chin, p. 62-4]
