Mycobacterium marinum is the most commonly observed atypical mycobacterial infection. It is an occupational hazard for aquarium and fish tank attendants and swimming pool cleaners. The infection may be confused with sporotrichosis. Skin lesions consist of papules or nodules that ulcerate and may ascend the arm or leg following regional lymphatic vessels. Patients with AIDS are at increased risk for this infection. [LaDou, p. 280]
