Minerals are natural solids. Minerals are formed through geological processes, which create the minerals chemical composition. Minerals have a highly ordered and characteristic atomic structure which defines their specific physical properties. Minerals can come in many compositions, from pure elements, to simple salts, to silicates which are very diverse and complex in structure. A rock is a mixture of minerals and does not have a specific composition.
