OPIUM/KAOLIN/PECTIN/BELLADONNA - ORAL (OH-pee-um/KAY-oh-lin/PECK-tin/bell-uh-DON-uh) USES: This medication is used in the treatment of diarrhea. HOW TO USE: This medication is usually taken after each loose bowel movement. Follow package instructions for proper dosing. The liquid form should be shaken well before pouring each dose. SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause stomach upset, bloating, constipation, dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, blurred vision or sun sensitivity. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. To avoid dizziness and lightheadedness when rising from a seated or lying position, get up slowly. Also limit your intake of alcoholic beverages which will aggravate these effects. Notify your doctor if your experience: mental confusion or unusual thoughts, breathing difficulties, trouble urinating, rapid pulse, skin rash, eye pain, flushing. If diarrhea is not relieved after two days of using this medication or if you develop a fever or stomach cramps, notify your doctor. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: heart disease, bowel problems, glaucoma, prostate trouble, ulcers, a history of drug dependency, allergies (especially to narcotic pain relievers). Use caution performing tasks requiring alertness if this medication causes you to feel drowsy. This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Consult your doctor before using any medication while breast-feeding. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take especially of: narcotic pain relievers, medications for sleeping, anti-anxiety drugs, anti- seizure drugs, cimetidine. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include unusual drowsiness, slow or fast heartbeat, flushing, dry mouth, unsteadiness, and loss of consciousness. NOTES: To maintain normal bowel habits, it is important to drink plenty of fluids (4 to 6 8 ounce glasses a day), eat foods high in fiber and roughage and exercise regularly. MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up. STORAGE: Store this medication at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat and light. The liquid form of this medication may be stored in the refrigerator to improve taste.
