    IMPORTANT NOTE: The following information is intended to supplement, not substitute for, the expertise and judgment of your physician, pharmacist or other healthcare professional. LOPERAMIDE/SIMETHICONE CHEWABLE TABLETS - ORAL (low-PAIR-uh-mide/sye-METH-ih-cone) COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Imodium Advanced USES: This combination medication is used to treat diarrhea and symptoms of gas (e.g., cramps, bloating, pressure). HOW TO USE: Chew this medication thoroughly, then swallow the tablet(s) usually 2 to 3 times daily as needed after each loose bowel movement (loose stool); or as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your age, medical condition, and response to therapy. Do not exceed the recommended dosage for your age group. Drink plenty of water or clear liquids while taking this medication. Doing so will help prevent the loss of fluids (dehydration) caused by the diarrhea. Do not take this medication for more than 2 days at a time for quick onset (acute) diarrhea or 10 days for long-term (chronic) diarrhea. Consult your doctor for additional information. SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, stomach upset, dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, or constipation may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: stomach pain, bloating, prolonged constipation. To relieve dry mouth, suck on (sugarless) hard candy or ice chips, chew (sugarless) gum, drink water, or use a saliva substitute. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: This medication is not recommended for use if you have the following medical conditions: high fever, blood or mucus in your stool (bowel movements). Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: liver problems, bowel disease (e.g., ulcerative colitis), any allergies. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before using this medication. It is not known if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: antibiotics (including trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole). Tell your doctor if you take any antacids or other products to help with digestion. These products may also contain simethicone. Tell your doctor if you take any drugs that cause drowsiness such as: medicine for sleep, sedatives, tranquilizers, anti- anxiety drugs (e.g., diazepam, lorazepam), narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine, morphine), psychiatric medicines (e.g., phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine or tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline), anti-seizure drugs (e.g., carbamazepine, topiramate), muscle relaxants, certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine). Check the labels on all your medicines (e.g., cough-and-cold products) because they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of these products. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: severe drowsiness and constipation. NOTES: Keep this drug out of the reach of children. MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up. STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
