INFLUENZA VIRUS VACCINE - VIAL INTRAMUSCULAR (in-flew-EN-zuh VYE-russ vack-SEEN) COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Fluogen, Flushield, Fluvirin, Fluzone USES: This medication is a vaccine against influenza virus. It is recommended for any person over 6 months of age who may be at increased risk of complications from the flu due to age or underlying medical conditions. HOW TO USE: The vial should be shaken well before using. The medication is given by injection into a muscle by a health care professional. Adults usually receive the injection in the upper arm and children receive it in the upper thigh. The vaccination is usually given in the September to October time frame when the incidence of flu virus begins to increase. Only one dose is required for persons age 9 years and older. Children under 9 years of age may receive a second dose depending on when the first dose was given. Discuss this schedule with your doctor. SIDE EFFECTS: Most common is soreness at the injection site which may last for up to 1-2 days. Fever, muscle aches and weakness occur infrequently. If any of these effects continue beyond two days or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you experience: breathing trouble, chest tightness, redness/itching/burning at injection site. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: other illnesses or infections, any allergies (especially to eggs or egg products). This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Because this medication appears in breast milk, consult your doctor before breast-feeding. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take including: steroids, immunosuppressants. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. NOTES: Vaccination may be given to anyone wishing to reduce the chance of getting the flu. For optimal protection, the vaccine must be repeated each year since it may contain different strains from previous years. MISSED DOSE: This is usually given as a one time dose. As with most medications, do not "double-up" the dose if a dose is missed. STORAGE: This medication is stored in the refrigerator as directed. Do not freeze.
