GREPAFLOXACIN - ORAL (grepp-uh-FLOX-uh-sin) COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Raxar USES: This medication is used to treat a variety of infections. This drug has been withdrawn from the U.S. market due to safety or effectiveness problems. HOW TO USE: Take this drug by mouth with or without food or milk, generally once daily. Some infections need only a single dose treatment. Drink plenty of fluids, unless otherwise instructed. Take this drug 4 hours before or 4 hours after any vitamins containing iron or zinc, antacids with calcium, magnesium or aluminum, or sucralfate. Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Do this by taking the medication at about the same time each day as directed. Continue to use this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a short time. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow resulting in a relapse of the infection. SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, change in taste sensation might occur. If these persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Unlikely but report promptly: muscle or tendon pain/swelling, vaginal discomfort/itching, stomach pain. Very unlikely but report promptly: seizures, vision problems, confusion, mood changes, fever, yellowing eyes or skin, chest pain, persistent sore throat. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: fainting, irregular heartbeat. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: Before using this drug, tell your doctor your medical history, including: allergies (especially drug allergies), liver disease, heart problems, brain/spinal disorders (e.g., seizures or severe blood vessel disease). Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in a secondary infection (e.g., oral, bladder or vaginal yeast infection). Avoid excessive sunlight, since this drug may cause sun sensitivity (a sunburn-like skin reaction). Sunscreen is advised. Caution performing tasks requiring alertness (e.g., driving) since this drug may cause dizziness. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This drug is excreted into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using this drug is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast- feeding. Caution is advised if this drug is used in persons under 18 years of age. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you may use, especially of: theophylline, warfarin, "aspirin-like" drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, diabetes medicines. Report other drugs which affect the heart rhythm (QTc prolongation), such as: dofetilide, pimozide, quinidine, sotalol, procainamide, sparfloxacin, "water pills" (diuretics such as furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide). Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Also, certain cough/cold drugs (with "adrenaline-like" medicine such as decongestants), cholinesterase-blockers (e.g., tacrine, donepezil) or isonniazid may increase the chance of seizures. Avoid drinking large amounts of beverages containing caffeine (coffee, tea, colas) or eating large amounts of chocolate. This drug may increase and/or prolong the effects of caffeine. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include an irregular heartbeat. NOTES: This medication has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use it later for another infection or give it to others. A different medication may be needed in those cases. MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up. STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
