FOLLITROPIN BETA - INJECTION (foll-ih-TROH-pin) COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Follistim USES: This medication is a hormone used to treat fertility problems in women. It is used in combination with another hormone (hCG) to stimulate the ovaries. HOW TO USE: Inject this medication under the skin (SQ) or into a muscle (IM) usually once daily; or use as directed by your doctor. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Learn all preparation and usage instructions in the product package and, if you have any questions about any of the information, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Before using, check this product visually for particles or discoloration. If either is present, do not use the liquid. Learn how to store and discard needles and medical supplies safely. Consult your pharmacist. SIDE EFFECTS: Dizziness, fever, chills, nausea, headache, unusual tiredness, breast tenderness, dry skin, rash, or pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: muscle pain, joint pain, swelling or pain in the legs or arms, bloating, stomach pain. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: unusually fast heartbeat, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: abnormal vaginal bleeding, thyroid or adrenal gland problems, cancer, tumors, ovarian cysts or enlargement, other fertility problems, any allergies. Multiple births may occur as a result of this therapy. This medication must not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Because of the potential risk to the infant, breast-feeding while using this drug is not recommended. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially of: other hormone medications (e.g., estrogens, progesterones). Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include severe stomach pain or swelling, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, severe headache, shortness of breath, and weakness. NOTES: Do not share this medication with others. Laboratory tests and/or medical tests (e.g., ultrasound, hormone levels) will be performed to monitor your progress. MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist to establish a new dosing schedule. STORAGE: Before mixing, the powder may be stored refrigerated or at room temperature between 36 and 77 degrees F (2 to 25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Use immediately after mixing. Discard any unused portion of the vial.
