DAUNORUBICIN CITRATE LIPOSOME - INJECTION (dawn-oh-REWB-eh-sin) COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Daunoxome WARNING: Daunorubicin may cause heart problems (including heart failure) or bone marrow suppression. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop an irregular heartbeat, trouble breathing, swelling of the hands or feet, easy bruising or bleeding, or signs of infection such as fever, unusual fatigue, or persistent sore throat. Tell your doctor if you have liver problems, heart problems, or have had chest x-rays. You may require smaller doses of daunorubicin or require different treatment. Daunorubicin can cause a reaction during the time the drug is being administered. Symptoms of this reaction include back pain, flushing, and chest tightness. Notify the doctor or nurse immediately if you experience these symptoms. USES: This medication is used to treat certain types of cancer (e.g., advanced Kaposi's sarcoma). HOW TO USE: Follow all instructions for dilution with correct IV fluids. Follow all safety precautions. Consult your pharmacist for details. Give this medication by injection into a vein (IV), generally over 60 minutes, every two weeks or as directed by the doctor. The length of treatment depends on your condition and response to therapy. Do not inject this medication into the muscle (IM) or just beneath the skin (subcutaneously). Closely monitor for redness, pain and swelling at or around the injection site (see SIDE EFFECTS). This medication should be checked visually for particles before use. If present, do not use the liquid. SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, diarrhea, headache, constipation, dizziness, fatigue, hair loss, or drowsiness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: fever, persistent sore throat, cough, chills, runny nose, stomach pain, loss of appetite, weakness or numbness, increased sweating, sores in the mouth or throat, mental/mood changes, joint or muscle pain. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: pain/redness at the injection site, vision changes, black or bloody stools, seizures, changes in hearing. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: irregular pulse, swelling in the hands and feet, trouble breathing, yellowing eyes and skin. An allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: any previous cancer, prior use of anthracycline drugs (e.g., daunorubicin, doxorubicin), blood cell problems (low blood cell counts such as neutropenia), heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcohol intake because it can intensify the dizziness or drowsiness effects of this medication. Because this medication can lower your body's ability to fight an infection, do not touch your eyes or the inside of your nose without first washing your hands. Do not have immunizations/vaccinations without the consent of your doctor and avoid contact with people who have recently received oral polio vaccine. Use caution with sharp objects like safety razors or nail cutters and avoid activities such as contact sports to lower the chance of getting cut, bruised or injured. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy. In addition, it is recommended that you not become pregnant while using this medication. Consult your doctor for more details. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: drugs causing drowsiness such as medicine for sleep, sedatives, tranquilizers, anti-anxiety drugs, narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), psychiatric medicines, anti-seizure drugs, muscle relaxants and antihistamines that cause drowsiness (e.g., diphenhydramine). Check the labels carefully on all your medicines (e.g., cough- and-cold products) because they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: very severe vomiting and sedation (severe drowsiness). NOTES: Laboratory and/or medical tests (including heart function tests) may be performed to monitor for side effects and response to treatment. MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose or if the dose is interrupted, contact your doctor immediately to establish a new dosing schedule. STORAGE: Store vials in a refrigerator between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 to 8 degrees C) away from light and moisture. After mixing and dilution in correct IV fluids (consult your pharmacist for details), the drug is stable at refrigerator temperature for six hours. Discard any unused liquid.
