CISAPRIDE - ORAL (SIS-uh-pride) COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Propulsid WARNING: Serious, even fatal heart problems have occurred when cisapride was used alone or with other drugs such as azole antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole), macrolide antibiotics (e.g., erythromycin), nefazodone, protease inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir), drugs used to treat irregular heartbeats such as quinidine or sotalol, antidepressants (e.g., tricyclic or certain tetracyclics), antipsychotics (e.g., certain phenothiazines, sertindole), astemizole, sparfloxacin, and terodiline. This is not a complete list of drugs that should not be used with cisapride. Tell your doctor of all medications you are using. Do not use cisapride if you have (or have had) heart problems, kidney problems, chest pain (angina), low potassium or magnesium levels, or breathing problems. Use only the amount prescribed by your doctor. USES: This medication is used to treat symptoms of nighttime heartburn due to reflux disease. This drug has been restricted in its use in the U.S. market due to safety problems. HOW TO USE: This medication is taken by mouth at least 15 minutes before meals and at bedtime. Take this as directed. Do not increase your dose, take this more often than prescribed or stop taking this without first consulting your doctor. LIQUID SUSPENSION FORM: Shake the bottle well before each use. SIDE EFFECTS: Diarrhea, nausea, headache, stuffy nose, constipation or coughing may occur infrequently as your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor promptly. Notify your doctor if you develop vision changes, chest pain, mental/mood changes or stomach pain while taking this medication. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: dizziness, fainting, irregular heartbeat. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to this drug, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: intestinal or stomach disorders, bleeding ulcers, lung problems, kidney problems, liver disease, heart problems (e.g., QT prolongation), cancer, certain blood disorders that may be caused by sudden loss of water (electrolyte disorders such as hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia), vomiting, poor diet, eating disorders (e.g., anorexia or bulimia), allergies (especially drug allergies). Limit alcohol intake as it may aggravate drug side effects. Caution is advised when using this drug in children less than 16 years of age because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug. This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Since small amounts of this medication are found in breast milk, consult your doctor before breast-feeding. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all the prescription and nonprescription drugs you use, especially of: blood thinners such as warfarin, anticholinergics such as dicyclomine, anti-anxiety drugs, tranquilizers, sedatives, azole antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole, fluconazole), troleandomycin, erythromycin, clarithromycin, certain protease inhibitors (e.g., ritonavir, indinavir), nefazodone, cimetidine, mibefradil, terodiline, certain diuretics/"water pills" (e.g., furosemide), fluvoxamine, certain tetracyclic antidepressants (e.g., maprotiline). Report other drugs which affect the heart rhythm (QTc prolongation), such as: quinidine, procainamide, sotalol, pimozide, amiodarone. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include diarrhea, stomach cramping, trouble sleeping, seizures, or irregular heartbeat. NOTES: Talk to your health care provider about dietary changes and raising the head of your bed which may help relieve heartburn. Certain tests (such as EKG and electrolytes) may be done as part of drug monitoring before and during therapy. MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up. STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat and light. Do not store in the bathroom.
