BUTORPHANOL INJECTION (byou-TOR-fan-ohl) COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Stadol USES: Butorphanol is a narcotic-like pain reliever. It is used to relieve the pain of surgical procedures and labor and to boost the effects of anesthesia. HOW TO USE: This is given by injection into a vein or muscle by a health care professional. How much and how often you receive this will depend on your condition and response. Use this medication exactly as prescribed. Do not increase your dose, take it more frequently or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed because this drug can be habit-forming. Also, if used for a longer period of time, do not suddenly stop using this drug without your doctor's approval. When used for extended periods, this medication may not work as well and may require different dosing. Consult your doctor if the medication is not working well. SIDE EFFECTS: Drowsiness, dizziness, incoordination, nervousness, a floating feeling, headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, trouble sleeping, dry mouth, confusion and sweating may occur. If these effects continue or become severe, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop: anxiety, hallucinations, mental confusion, slow or irregular heartbeat, breathing trouble, seizures. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: Before using this, tell your doctor if you have: heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, lung disease, breathing disorders, a history of drug dependency, allergies (especially to pain relievers). Use caution driving and avoid activities requiring alertness since this medication can cause dizziness, drowsiness and incoordination. Avoid the use of alcohol while using this drug as it will increase these side effects. Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug. This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. When in labor, this medication may be used with caution. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Small amounts of this medication are found in breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to the effects of this medication. Use it with caution. Watch for dizziness. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any nonprescription or prescription medication you use, particularly of: other narcotic pain relievers, tranquilizers, muscle relaxers, medication for sleep, anti-anxiety drugs, antidepressants, certain antihistamines (drowsiness-causing antihistamines such as diphenhydramine). Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include cold and clammy skin, slowed breathing, slowed heartbeat, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, deep sleep, and loss of consciousness. NOTES: Do not allow anyone else to use this medication. Properly discard used syringes, needles and any other supplies used for injection. MISSED DOSE: This medication is only given as needed by a health care professional. STORAGE: Store this medication at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children.
