BUDESONIDE - ORAL (byou-DESS-oh-nide) COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Entocort EC USES: Budesonide is used to treat a type of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease). HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth usually once daily in the morning; or as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Do not crush or chew this medication. Swallow the medication whole. Use this medication exactly as prescribed. Do not increase your dose, take it more frequently, or use it for a longer period of time than prescribed because it may increase your chance of serious side effects. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Some conditions may become worse when the drug is abruptly stopped. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased. SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, nausea, dizziness, increased sweating, stomach upset, or may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: trouble breathing, fever, pain (e.g., back, stomach/abdominal, or generalized pain). Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: chest pain, swelling of the tongue or face/legs/arms, vision problems, easy bruising, tingling or numbness of the hands/feet, tremor, unusually fast heartbeat, trouble sleeping, mental/mood changes, rash, acne, urination problems (e.g., inability to urinate or increase in nighttime urination), changes in menstrual period, increased hair growth (body hair). Contact your doctor if you experience any of the signs of low steroid levels: unusual weakness, weight loss, vomiting, fainting, dizziness. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: liver problems, tuberculosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, brittle bones (osteoporosis), stomach problems (e.g., peptic ulcer), personal or family history of eye problems (e.g., cataracts, glaucoma), any allergies (especially to other steroid medications like prednisone). Avoid contact with people currently infected with the chicken pox or the measles. Consult your doctor immediately if you think you have been exposed to the chicken pox or measles virus. Serious infection or injury, emotional stress, or major surgery may increase your bodies need for steroids. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details. Caution is advised when using this drug in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Based on information for similar drugs, budesonide may pass into breast milk. Therefore, consult your doctor before breast-feeding. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: azole antifungals (e.g., itraconazole, ketoconazole), cimetidine, protease inhibitors (e.g., indinavir, ritonavir), macrolide antibiotics (e.g., clarithromycin, erythromycin), rifampin, mifepristone. Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while using this medication unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. This product may affect the results of certain lab tests. Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use this drug. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include: generalized swelling, unusual fatigue and sluggishness. NOTES: Do not share this medication with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests may be performed to monitor your progress. Inform all your doctors you use, or have used this medication. MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up. STORAGE: Store at room temperature (77 degrees F or 25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) is permitted. MEDICAL ALERT: Your condition can cause complications in a medical emergency.
