ANTIPYRINE WITH BENZOCAINE - OTIC (AN-tee-PIE-reen WITH BEN-zoh-cane) COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Auralgan, Aurodex, Auroto USES: This medication contains benzocaine, a topical anesthetic which numbs the skin, and antipyrine, a pain reliever. It is used to relieve pain and discomfort of certain ear problems. HOW TO USE: This medication is used in the ear(s) as directed. To administer properly, lie on your side or tilt the head so the ear faces up. Put the prescribed number of drops into the ear using the dropper provided. Do not insert the dropper into the ear and avoid touching the dropper to the ear or any other surface. To allow the drops to run into the ear canal, hold the earlobe up and back in adults and down and back in children. Keep the ear tilted for 1 to 2 minutes. A soft cotton plug may be gently inserted into the ear to keep the ear drops in place. Use a plug only if directed to do so. SIDE EFFECTS: Minor stinging, burning or tenderness of the ear may occur when this is first used. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, or if your symptoms do not improve within a few days, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if any of the following effects occur: irritation, rash, itching. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have any of the following conditions: infection, any allergies. This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy or while breast-feeding. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. This medicine may be harmful if swallowed. If you or someone you know may have taken this medicine by mouth, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. NOTES: For comfort, drops may be warmed to body temperature by rolling the bottle in your hands for a few minutes before using them. Do not heat in a microwave or place in hot water. MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up. STORAGE: Store at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture. Avoid freezing.
