    IMPORTANT NOTE: The following information is intended to supplement, not substitute for, the expertise and judgment of your physician, pharmacist or other healthcare professional. It should not be construed to indicate that use of the drug is safe, appropriate, or effective for you. Consult your healthcare professional before using this drug. ALPROSTADIL - INTRACAVERNOSAL (al-PROSS-tuh-dill) COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Caverject USES: This medication is used to treat impotence. HOW TO USE: This medication is administered by injection into the penis as directed. It is recommended that this medication be used no more than 3 times a week allowing at least 24 hours between uses. You must be trained on proper injection technique for self-injection. Read the manufacturer's patient instructions and follow the directions carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain anything you do not understand. Do not change your dose or use this more often than directed. Alternate sides of the penis when injecting and vary the site of the injection. Do not use if the solution is cloudy, colored or contains particles. Properly discard needles, syringes and unused solution after each use. SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause mild pain, irritation or slight bleeding at the injection site. If these symptoms continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop: tenderness or swelling of the penis, redness/lumps/unusual curving of the penis. The erection should last about one hour. If an erection lasts more than 4 hours, seek immediate medical attention. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, including: sickle cell anemia, cancer, leukemia, multiple myeloma, penile implants, an abnormally formed penis, kidney disease, any allergies you have. This medication is not to be used by women or children. DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may use, including: blood thinners. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include a prolonged erection lasting over 4 hours. NOTES: This medication produces an erection in 5 to 20 minutes which should last for about one hour. Keep all doctor's visits as you will be scheduled for checkups to monitor the effectiveness and safety of the medication. MISSED DOSE: Use this medication only as directed. This is not used on a scheduled basis. STORAGE: Consult your pharmacist and the manufacturer instruction sheet for proper storage directions.
