Reproduction
Bacteria Reproduction
Since bacterial organisms have no nuclear division they cannot have mitosis or meiosis processes present.
Asexual Reproduction
Asexual reproduction is involving one bacterial organism
Binary Fission
Duplication of single chromosome (DNA replication)
Simple cell division follows resulting to the formation of two independent cells.
Budding: Division may not always be equal resulting to a new cell formed and represented as small buds.
Spore Formation
This type of asexual reproduction occurs in harsh conditions. It is similar to budding in binary fission except it involves the creation of an additional thick outer covering.
Spore formation is a mechanism for quick and wide dispersal.
Sexual Reproduction
The form of sexual reproduction in bacterial organisms involve the mechanism, conjugation.
Conjugation represents mating by means of a pilus. A male partner transfers a component of its DNA to the female partner (to some or all) and this results in her acquirement of new characteristics.
Sexual reproduction can also be achieved in bacterial organisms through the mechanism of transformation. This mechanism is artificially done; it is a lab technique; donor DNA is transferred to recipient. And the intention is to create a modified form of the bacteria with desirable traits.
Transduction is another mechanism of sexual reproduction in bacterial organism involving the exchange of DNA by means of viruses; bacteria to bacteria through infection leading to the adoption of new characteristics.
